Western Medical Acupuncture
What it is?
A Modern Therapeutic treatment
Western Medical Acupuncture or “dry needling” is the therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles. Medical acupuncture is an evidence based approach applying anatomy, physiology and pathology and it is different from Traditional Chinese Acupuncture.
How it works?
Fine needles stimulate the nervous system.
This has a local effect on the skin and muscles; an axon reflex occurs causing dilatation of local blood vessels, which helps to increase blood flow to the area and remove waste products. Consequently, this creates a chain reaction where opioids and other pain management chemicals are released from the body to reduce the pain in the affected area and induce global relaxation.
Medical acupuncture can be used to manage pain in a variety of musculoskeletal pain disorders.
- Headaches
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Tendon related pain
Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments, both conventional and complementary. Studies in the safety of acupuncture published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) concluded that serious side effects are extremely rare.
